In this first of your home based business plan, you will assess your personal desires and skills to determine if you want to be a home based business owner.

Long commutes...feelings that your work is not appreciated...long hours...not enough family time...these are some of the reasons we think of when we decide to start our own home business.

For some of us, it is because we have certain disabilities. Our minds are active but we can not work outside the home.

We see the ads in magazines and on television about earning money at home. Some of us send away for the information, only to find this business or idea does not suit us. Some of the ads tell us to log on to a Web site for more information and when we do they want our e-mail address before they will tell us what the business is about.

When you are thinking about starting your home based business, you should think about your desires for your future and the skills you have.

You have probably considered a work at home business for several reasons:

• You want to be your own boss.
• You want to set your own work schedule.
• Your commute time to work each day does not allow you time to relax and spend as much time with your family as you would like.
• You do not like your current job for a number of reasons.

Give careful consideration to your reasons. Although you will be your own boss, to be successful in your home based business you will need to dedicate yourself to your business. The product or service you deliver will need to be of the best quality. Depending on the type of business you select, you may be working under the pressure of deadlines.

Additional consideration should be given to:

• Whether you are able to analyze problems and come up with alternative solutions.
• Whether you are able to make decisions and act on them.
• How much money you need to live comfortably.
• Will you be able to take on the number of customers or clients to achieve your financial goal?
• Are you willing to make your home business profitable and successful by expanding slowly?

List your objectives for wanting to start a business. Assess each one individually. Think about them. To you, are these good reasons?
